'The Polish Defence' - Hurricanes of F/O Stefan Witorzenc, and P/O Pawel Zenker, No. 501 Squadron. SOLD

'The Polish Defence' - Hurricanes of F/O Stefan Witorzenc and P/O Pawel Zenker, No. 501 Squadron climb over the Thames Estuary.

Both airmen fought in defence of Poland when it was attacked at the outset of the war. They both subsequently escaped the country, to make their way to Britain in the hope of continuing to fight with the RAF. They were both posted to 501 Squadron early in August 1940, before the Polish Squadrons of the RAF had become operational. As a result, they were thrown straight in to some of the hardest fighting of the Battle of Britain.

This painting depicts their two Hurricanes climbing from Gravesend, over the Isle of Sheppey in the Thames Estuary, prior to intercepting an evening raid on 18/8/40, 'The Hardest Day'.

In the ensuing encounter, 501 Squadron became embroiled in a fight with Me109s of 2nd Gruppe JG51. Witorzenc and Zenker both shot down Me109s of two very experienced enemy pilots in the combat.

After fighting through the Battle of Britain, Witorzenc served a distinguished flying career with the RAF throughout the war, which he survived.

Zenker was reported 'Missing in Action' over the Channel a week later (24/8/40), last seen pursuing enemy aircraft out to sea.

My intention had been to post this painting on a date that commemorated the actions of the pilots, but current events seemed to make it particularly relevant right now. So, if it can serve to help in some small way at the present time, then this seems even more appropriate.

The painting is Oil on Extra Fine Linen Canvas Board, Size c. 12"x8", supplied in an attractive presentation box, ready to finish with a frame of your choice.
