‘Of Bravery in Summer Skies’ - Spitfire of Sq/L. ‘Harry’ Cornwall, 508 Squadron, S.E. England 1940 (from the historical fiction novel ‘Harry’s Game- Hell’s Corner’, by Karl Jackson).

This painting is based on the brilliant fictional “Harry’s Game” novels by author Karl Jackson. The series starts with an interesting premise... what if, by some twist of fate, a skilled young female aviator (the book’s fictional hero, Harriet Cornwall (a.k.a. ‘Harry')), had somehow ended up in the cockpit of an RAF fighter during the chaos of the Battle of France in 1940?

What follows is a series of novels following ‘Harry’s’ flying exploits throughout the war, with a deep respect for the original history throughout. Unfailing in technical accuracy and historical research, they are ultimately a tribute to the real people who so bravely endured the challenges of war.

This painting depicts a moment at the height of the Battle of Britain, 1940, on an airfield near the South Coast, where ‘Harry' is seen here taking command of her Spitfire Squadron. For all its fictional roots, this scene is almost our quintessential image of the Battle of Britain today:

The young pilots stand around in readiness near their Spitfires, behind them the English countryside in the almost brazen summer of 1940. History hangs in the balance, in the hands of The Few.

This print is taken from one of my original oil paintings, created as a celebration of the “Harry’s Game” novels and in commemoration of the real pilots of WW2 whom they are in a manner of tribute to.

This is a full size reproduction of the original 40cm x 30cm (c. 16" x 12") painting with a small border, making a total sheet size of 45cm x 35cm (c. 18" x 14") (+/- 3mm).
