The painting depicts S/Ldr. C. W. Williams reuniting with Sgt. W. J. Etherington and other members of 17 Squadron, after he had become separated from them and embroiled in a frantic dogfight with 4 German Me109 fighters on the 18th August 1940, 'The Hardest Day' of the Battle of Britain.
The background to the scene is the iconic White cliffs at Dover, with the chain Home Radar site at Swingate visible above the cliffs.
