The painting depicts the Hurricane of P/O John L. W. Ellacombe, 151 Squadron, on the 24/8/1940. After a fierce dogfight with only 7 Hurricanes of his Squadron available to defend against a force of around 50 raiding aircraft, Ellacombe damaged this Heinkel 111 bomber enough to force it to land in afield near Great Wakering in Essex. He circles around the aircraft after the crew have climbed out, concerned for the safety of the policeman who has arrived on the scene…
Ellacombe finally sees, with relief, that all is calm and that his task of ‘Covering the Bobby’ is no longer needed. He departs, with a certain appreciation of the strange humour of the situation, having watched the policeman taking down the crew's details in a notebook (almost as if they had been pulled up for a minor traffic offence!).
This print is taken from one of my original oil paintings, created to commemorate the bravery of the pilots involved in the Battle of Britain.
